“For we walk by faith, not by sight."

Walking with Jesus — Daily Devotion

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7

I used to think walking by faith meant feeling spiritual.

Maybe it meant closing my eyes during worship, sensing God’s presence in a powerful way, or having supernatural peace in every situation.

Then life punched me in the gut, and I learned something important:

Faith is not dependent on how spiritual we feel.

Paul wrote, *“For we walk by faith, not by sight,”* as a man who understood suffering. His life was not easy. He knew beatings, prison cells, shipwrecks, rejection, betrayal, weakness, and affliction. His eyes had seen plenty of reasons to be discouraged.

Sight showed him hardship.

Sight showed him pain.

Sight showed him churches struggling, friends walking away, enemies pressing in, and prison walls closing around him.

But faith remembered something sight could not explain.

Faith remembered the risen Christ.

That is the thing about sight. It can be a terrible judge of reality.

Sight says the prodigal is never coming home.

Sight says the diagnosis is final.

Sight says the door is closed for good.

Sight says you are too old, too young, too broken, too ordinary, or too far gone to matter.

Sight counts the bank balance and panics.

Sight watches the news and despairs.

But faith knows something sight does not.

Faith remembers that graves open. Seas part. Giants fall. Fire does not consume the faithful. Lions lose their appetite. Widows’ oil does not run dry. And a crucified Savior walked out of the tomb.

Faith is not pretending everything is fine.

Faith is trusting God when everything is not fine.

It is knowing that what we see is temporary, but what we cannot see is eternal. It is taking the next step when the road is unclear. It is praying when the answer has not yet come. It is worshiping when the heart is heavy. It is obeying God when circumstances do not make sense.

Walking by faith does not mean we ignore reality.

It means we refuse to let visible circumstances have the final word.

Today, your sight may be showing you impossibility.

Good. That is exactly where faith does its best work.

Because God is not limited by what we can see.
