Abiding in the Vine

Walking with Jesus

Day 5: Abiding in the Vine

“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.” John 15:5

To abide means to remain. It means staying close, drawing strength each day from the living presence of Jesus. Just as a branch receives life and nourishment from the vine, we receive everything we need from Christ.

Fruit does not grow by human effort, religious strain, or spiritual performance. Fruit grows from connection. A healthy branch does not struggle to produce fruit; it simply remains attached to the vine. In the same way, when we remain close to Jesus, His life flows through us, and in His time, fruit begins to appear.

The danger comes when we begin leaning on our own limited strength. We may still look busy, active, and productive on the outside, but inwardly we can begin to dry up. Without the life of Christ flowing through us, our work becomes weary, our faith becomes strained, and our spirit begins to lose its strength.

So stay close to the Vine. Remain in His Word. Remain in prayer. Remain in obedience. Remain in His grace. His life-giving presence will sustain you, strengthen you, and produce fruit that lasts.

You do not have to force the fruit. Just remain faithful to the Vine, and the fruit will follow.

Ray’s Reflection

I am often heard saying, “Don’t look at me, look to the One who sends me.”

That is not false humility. That is simple truth. Anything good, useful, or lasting that comes through my life does not begin with me. It begins with Jesus. I am only a branch. He is the Vine.

A branch does not brag about the fruit. It does not take credit for the nourishment, the growth, or the harvest. The branch simply stays connected. The life comes from the vine. The strength comes from the vine. The fruit comes from the vine.

That is how I want to live. When I preach, teach, pray, write, or encourage someone, my prayer is that people do not walk away impressed with me, but drawn closer to Him. I do not want to be the destination. I want to be a signpost.

The danger in ministry, and in life, is when we begin to believe the fruit belongs to us. It does not. We may plant, water, speak, serve, and pray, but God gives the increase.

So don’t look at me. Look to Jesus. He is the One who sends, strengthens, sustains, and saves. Apart from Him, I can do nothing. But abiding in Him, fruit will come.

Let Us Pray

Dear Heavenly Father, teach us to remain in You every day. Help us draw our strength, wisdom, peace, and purpose from You alone. Let Your grace flow through us like life through the branches, nurturing us and shaping us to bear lasting and abundant fruit.

Keep us from depending on our own strength, and remind us that apart from You, we can do nothing. May our lives reflect the evidence of Your presence within us.

In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen.

Walk in faith, rest in grace, and trust the One who walks beside you.
In His love and grace,
